Chapter 28 The Twist
Wen Jiubo briefly raised his head to look at me, and then he said, “I know what you are thinking. I also know that maybe you won’t believe what I’m saying now. But I never loved Wen Qingyu. She may have taught me a lot of things, and the pain I felt when she died is something I will never forget. But the reason why I still protect this land is not because I loved her, but because I feel guilty. I never thought that you and Qing Yu were the same person; I never thought this way in the past and nor will I in the future. You don’t need to become Qing Yu to earn my love, Gu Yu.”
I kissed his lips.
He was a little startled as he did not expect this. I was so clumsy. Rather than saying that I kissed him, it was better to say that our lips mashed together. I was so clumsy that I bumped into his teeth and it was very painful. However, I did not step back, and he did not push me away. Instead, he gently pulled me into his arms.
“I never believed what Xu Yingchen said,” I stressed.
“I know.” Wen Jiubo smiled and stroked my nose.
All of sudden, the paper charm in my hand began to emit light. I was startled and took a few steps back.
“The spell is starting,” Wen Jiubo said. “The barrier can be removed!”
“But, but… I haven’t done anything yet,” I said confusedly.
Wen Jiubo smiled. “Just because you don’t know how to chant the spell doesn’t mean you can’t activate the paper charm. You have a strong power inside you. Because of your emotional changes, you accidentally started it.”
Upon saying that, the ground began to shake violently. Wen Jiubo grabbed me by the arm, but I took the chance to hug him tightly.
“Look at the sky.” I heard Wen Jiubo’s voice from above.
I looked up. The darkness gradually dissipated, and soon, the sky became clear.
However, at that time, I did not know that it was the last time I would be able to embrace him like this.
“Yes!” I said excitedly. “The tornado is gone. Everything returned to normal again! We made it!”
Yet it was not accurate to say that ‘everything returned to normal’. Because while we were trapped in the tornado, the city had turned into ruins. Roads were destroyed and buildings collapsed as if the whole city had gone through a magnitude eight earthquake.
However, everything should be over now. I was happy, after all, we thwarted Xu Yingchen’s plan to destroy the world. Without the beast Nian, he was like a poisoned rat in a hole. We just had to find him to finish him.
A few minutes later, we heard shouts coming from afar. It was Zhu Xuan, Bai, Shi Yitong, and Su Xiaoyun running towards us.
“You all came back!” I shouted excitedly. As I attempted to cross over the bumpy road to meet them, suddenly Xu Yingchen appeared out of nowhere in front of Wen Jiubo and me, blocking my way.
“Xu Yingchen!” I shouted immediately. “How dare you show up again! We have crushed your plan, the only path left for you is straight to hell!!”
“Is that so?”
However, Xu Yingchen did not show any frustration, instead, he laughed creepily.
“Congratulations. Indeed, the beast Nian was driven away, and the barrier was broken. You are indeed more capable than I thought. You won and I’m all yours.”
Xu Yingchen stretched out his hands as if he was waiting for me to handcuff him. He calmly stared at me.
He stared at me so creepily that I began to doubt him. How could Xu Yingchen let himself get caught without putting up a fight? It was too suspicious.
Unsurprisingly, a second later, he gave me a sly smile.
“But… I bet you did not pay attention to the old fox standing behind you, did you?”
The old fox… I turned around with doubt. Did he mean Wen Jiubo?
I didn’t know when, but Wen Jiubo was curled up on the ground as if he was in great pain.
“Wen Jiubo!” I immediately rushed to Wen Jiubo. “Are you okay? Talk to me!”
Beads of sweat were covering his forehead as if he was suffering tremendously.
“Xu Yingchen!” I turned my head around and shouted at him. “What did you do?!”
“Me?” Xu Yingchen said with a smile. “Nothing. You should ask yourself this question.”
There were so many thoughts racing through my head. What did we do? We just broke the barrier and drove the beast Nian back to its world! Was there anything we did wrong?
Xu Yingchen suddenly burst into laughter. “Hahahaha! What should I tell you? You thought you could defeat me with your intelligence and bravery?! Aren’t you always asking for my purpose? Of course, destroying the world, killing all the monsters in the world——you actually bought it. I really don’t know if you guys went crazy or I did! What would I get from destroying the world? No, what I really want, what I really, really want to see, is the death of the nine-tailed fox! ”
I stared at him, stunned. “What… do you mean?”
“I wanted you to break the barrier,” Xu Yingchen said scornfully. “I know that this fox is weak now, and that he would let you cast the last spell. But this barrier is made specifically for you. After a thousand years, even the seal set by princess Qing Yu should have weakened by now. And this barrier will absorb all the power inside you like a conductive wire, and then——the power will return to its master.”
Return to its master… I looked at Wen Jiubo. Did that mean…
“Poor demon fox, he has been stuck in his human form for more than a thousand years. Now, he suddenly got his powers back, so he can’t remain in his human form anymore.” Xu Yingchen smiled coldly. “Just like that, he will turn into a beast in front of you!”
Wen Jiubo’s body was shining, and as Xu Yingchen said, I could see that his body was gradually changing. He groaned painfully as if he was trying to suppress the transformation.
“What’s wrong with you?! Even now, you’re still trying to bring me to your side?” I yelled at Xu Yingchen. “In your dreams! No matter what he will become, I will definitely stand by his side and save him from your stupid tricks! You gave him his powers back, and he will only become stronger; you will never escape!”
Xu Yingchen laughed. “Who said that I want to escape? I’m going to die here today, but my lovely little princess, you must have forgotten that we are in the middle of a city which was destroyed by a tornado. There are hundreds or even thousands of fearful humans here. What do you think they will do when they see a giant monster, as tall as a three-story building, suddenly show up? ”
